The newest Miss New York is going for the triple crown.
Kira Kazantsev of Manhattan won the state title Saturday night, besting a field of 20 other women at the St. George Theatre in Staten Island. Now Kazantsev, originally from San Francisco, will vie for the Miss America 2015 title in Atlantic City in September. If she wins, the Empire State will hit the trifecta, with three consecutive Miss Americas.
That hope gave the state pageant its “Lightning Strikes” theme and led to an evening featuring songs and choreography centered around the number three.
But for vocalist Kazantsev, who has been accepted into Fordham’s law school, it was the number one that mattered Saturday. Competing as Miss City of New York, Kazantsev said the $10,000 she won along with her crown will help with law school.
“This is huge for me in terms of the scholarship opportunity,” she said. As for her shot at the big crown, the woman repping the Big Apple says, “I think that the state of New York likes to be first at everything, so why not be the first to win three in a row?
